For the non-riding companions or for those who wish to do more than just ride

Ant’s riding safaris are unique in that there is much more to offer than just riding through the African Bushveld. There are a number of other safari experiences for those who wish to take a break from riding or are travelling with non-riding companions or families. As a rider, you may wish to join your non-riding companions on any of the other activities, alternatively you can ride and they can enjoy one of the following:

Guided walks and walking safaris

For those who prefer walking, our guides will lead you through the bushveld on foot. These walks are informative and interactive, enabling guests to gain knowledge of the flora and fauna resident on the reserve. Learning to recognise tracks is great fun. These walks can be in the form of a gentle stroll, or a more energetic can hike over the plains and down impressive gorges.

Day and night game drives

Our guides will be available to take you out in an open 4×4 Land Cruiser for morning or afternoon game drives or using a spotlight at night to look for elusive nocturnal animals, such as the rare brown hyena, aardvark, bushbaby and porcupine as these are rarely seen. The advantage of a game drive is that you are able to cover more ground across the reserve. Game drives and walks can often be combined to make game viewing and photography more exciting.

Family safaris

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill Riding Safaris will give your children a life-changing experience from the chance to ride with wildlife to a number of other safari experiences. We have a selection of wonderful ponies catering to both the novice and experienced child rider. Beginners will be led by a competent guide and riding lessons are also available. Under 4-year-old children will be led on a pony in and around the lodge area as they are still too young to be taken out on long outrides.

Other activities available to children are as follows: guided bush / bug walks, game drives, archery, fishing, snake handling to name but a few.

Special food and meal times can be arranged, alternatively families can dine together.
While the variety of activities keep all well entertained, they will all learn a great deal about wildlife and gain inspiration to last them a lifetime. Many children learn to ride here and how to appreciate the environment at Ant’s Riding Safaris.

Game Census Safari

For those who are hooked on Africa and riding, there comes a time when you want a totally different horse safari experience. Our annual game census safari is just that!

It’s a time in the bush when wildlife conservation prevails and horse riders have the opportunity to be part of it for an entire week usually held in June. From game counting and darting, to capturing and relocating wildlife on horseback, the activities all have a unique purpose: to keep the private reserve and its animal residents thriving.

Traditionally game censuses are done by helicopter but we capitalise on what we know best and perform the whole operation on horseback. It continues to remain more accurate than a helicopter count and most importantly, causes zero disturbance to the wildlife.

It’s a unique way to experience horseback riding and the bush in a way that whole-heartedly immerses participants into anything but ordinary activities on the private game reserve. Those guests not participating in game census on horseback can join in on the vehicles, however we do not offer “normal or separate” game drives or guided walks during this week especially during the days that we are actively busy with game count or game capture.

Safari with a purpose. Contact us if you’d like to be part of your next riding adventure.
