Horse riding safaris: the Horses and Riding
It has taken us 15 years to select a string of about 60 horses which are fit, responsive
and reliable and also totally adapted to the African environment. The horses range from
big strong forward going thoroughbreds, tough African Boerperd, and exciting crossbreeds.
We take great care in matching the riders ability and confidence to their preference in
type and responsiveness of their mount. Rides vary in pace and duration according to our
guests desires and ability. Our selection of reliable children’s ponies enable the experience
of incredible game viewing to be shared by all. For absolute beginners our steady horses
help develop confidence and ability, and for non riders a host of different activities on
offer.
The Riding and a typical day:
We pride ourselves in our unique flexibility, each day is tailored to suit the guests and
we are able to offer up to 3 different activities in any one morning or
afternoon. Guests who are purely interested in riding may spend up to 6 hours a day in the
saddle during morning and afternoon rides whilst those not as enthusiastic can enjoy a mixture
of riding as well as other activities such as a guided walks or game drives.
For families or couples where some ride and others don’t, you can enjoy separate activities
alternatively as we have two guides on each ride, novices can go out with their more competent
partners without slowing the ride. Basic lessons for non riders are available at both properties,
many guests learn to ride here.
Weight limit: Our weight limit is 120 kg (19 stone)
Tack and equipment:
The saddles we use are Maclelan saddles, made locally and which are based on the famous old US
cavalry saddles, designed for the comfort of both horse and rider alike. We do also have a few
English saddles available.
No client will be allowed to ride with us unless they are wearing a hat so we stock a selection
of sizes. We do, however, recommend that you bring your own well-fitted helmet if you plan to
spend many hours riding and in the saddle. Wide brimmed hat covers are advisable. In order to be
covered by both your own and our insurers the wearing of riding helmets are compulsory.
